Socio-Economic Integration Of The German Community In Valparaiso (1850-1930)
Abstract
This article examines the socio-economic activity of the German collectivity of Valparaiso, in historical perspective, beginning in the mid-19th century, when the economic activity in Valparaíso experienced a significant shift by becoming part of the global capitalist process, until 1930 when the development cycle based on nitrate exports ends. The article gives account of the important part that Valparaiso Germans played in the economic elite of the city and of the institutional support that they received to participate in international trade, enjoying large advantages over other less-favoured nations. Also, they developed social and cultural institutions that strengthened their group and facilitated their stay, the process of adaptation and integration for some; for others, these institutions allowed them to guard their values and avoid relations with the host society.
