Abstract

The Spanish referendum on NATO in 1986 has been regarded by
some as one of the last milestones of the (political and social) Spanish
Transition. This event measured the strength of the supporters
of “yes” and “no”. The “no” was largely supported by social
movements, among them neighborhood associations. We propose
a study of these asssocations by analyzing the position of the
neighborhood movement of Valladolid. Their position was contrary
to this military instrument, and much more nuanced than the position
of political parties. The long campaign that with its negative
result (for the “no”) deeply marked the citizens’ movement.

Keywords: NATO, anti-militarism, neighborhood associations,
