Abstract

This paper presents an analysis of the first general census of
the medieval confraternities in Spain. Four hundred and thirtysix
confraternities are identified between the years 1122-1521;
half of them are located in Seville, Zaragoza, and Valencia and
the majority of these are from the 14th and 15th centuries. This
analysis shows both their venerations along with the clear
predominance of trade associations. This study establishes
a general interpretation for the confraternal, Hispanic movement
using economic and political parameters more than the
religious and welfare aspects.

Keywords: Confraternities, Spain, religious history, civil society,
12th- 16th centuries.
