Abstract

This research aims to analyse the tourist image of the Aconcagua Province through the textual and visual information published in “En Viaje” magazine between 1933 and 1973. With the emergence of the industry of tourism in Chile, directed by the State and entrepreneurs, a particular representation of the territory will be created to captivate local and foreign tourists. Editors, journalists, writers and photographers, will build an attractive image of the provinces, promoting its natural, historical and cultural attributes. From this analysis of the reports and illustrations, there is evidence of a set of tourist attractions linked to coastal resorts, hot springs, ski slopes and colonial towns of the Aconcagua Province, which converge toward a global tourist representation. It is proposed that this image is built on the basis of historical and sociocultural contexts, economic development strategies and a political conception which promotes national identity.
