El maritorio magallánico interoceánico en la temprana cartografía náutica inglesa (1670-1710)

Resumen

El artículo analiza la representación inglesa del maritorio magallánico interoceánico entre 1670 y 1710, un espacio que, a diferencia de otras áreas coloniales, evidenció un doble desfase cartográfico. Por una parte, en relación con las colonias inglesas en América, más tempranamente representadas; por otra, frente a las potencias europeas, en especial España y los Países Bajos, que ya habían desarrollado una producción sistemática sobre la región. En un contexto de creciente interés por el Pacífico, estas representaciones surgieron en ámbitos no especializados en cartografía -casas gremiales, imprentas y círculos científicos- donde confluyeron artesanos, comerciantes y patrocinadores. El estudio examina cómo esta diversidad de orígenes dio forma a una cartografía versátil y adaptativa, situada en el cruce entre conocimiento geográfico, científico e intereses imperiales, así como en diálogo con el mercado artístico de la época. En conjunto, el artículo propone que la representación del maritorio magallánico debe entenderse como parte de un proceso más amplio de redefinición cartográfica, comercial y política en la Inglaterra de fines del siglo XVII y comienzos del XVIII.
