Abstract

Este artículo analiza la construcción de conocimiento hidrográfico sobre el maritorio magallánico a partir de las expediciones británicas lideradas por Phillip Parker King y Robert Fitzroy entre 1826 y 1834. Considerando la importancia del dominio naval para el imperio británico, se estudia el posicionamiento de la hidrografía como vehículo de expansión de poder imperial, instrumentalizando la práctica científica e institucional para consolidar el conocimiento e influencia sobre áreas de interés geopolítico. Particularmente, se analiza la proyección británica hacia el Pacífico Sur Oriental en el contexto post-independencias, proceso que abrió nuevas posibilidades comerciales, intelectuales y políticas para Gran Bretaña en América del Sur. Se argumenta que los levantamientos hidrográficos de Parker King y Fitzroy, tanto su actividad exploratoria como la producción y difusión de resultados, se enmarcan en un proyecto imperial de escala global basada en el conocimiento científico para consolidar la hegemonía geopolítica británica sobre áreas de interés. A través del conocimiento náutico y científico levantado mediante prácticas profesionalizadas y estandarizadas, se produjeron y difundieron nuevos hallazgos sobre el maritorio magallánico, poniendo especial énfasis en el análisis de los pasos transoceánicos. Estos hallazgos fueron clave para abrir la región, inaugurando con ello una nueva etapa en la navegación transoceánica.
