European Women In The Antofagasta Region Nitrate Cycle: 1880-1930. Female Italian, Yugoslavian, And German Immigration
Abstract
During the so-called historical nitrate cycle, 1880-1930, which hegemonized Shanks technology, the most important immigration flow took place in Chile. Therefore, the population of the Antofagasta nitrate region in the northern territory in 1907 strongly increased in all ambits due to the arrival of Latin American contingents and waves of Europeans who, due to economic crises, political instability, and the effects of the First World War (1914-1918) had to look for other horizons overseas. In this context, like other regions of the country, the Chilean north hosted female Italian, Yugoslavian, and German immigrants.
It is interesting to highlight four aspects of these three contingents, which are related to regional society: a) Marriage patterns indicating the extent of exogamy or endogamy of the European groups studied; b) Geographic origin of female migrants in the zone studied; c) Their main occupation and forms of integration in the labor market; d) Family structures, through the identification of migrant family groups and the way the migrant process occurred.
