The Roman Revolution Ronald Syme, About 70 Years Later
Abstract
This article proposes to understand The Roman Revolution,
Ronald Syme’s seminal work, as an emblematic text of the
European historiographical crisis during the period between
the world wars. To do so, the article proposes to differentiate
Syme’s work from the criticism to The Roman Revolution led
by Momigliano, as well to consider the particular history of
the book since it was published in 1938 until the late 1970.
Keywords: Roman Revolution, historiographical criticism, history
of the book, paradigms crisis, new perspectives.
