Abstract

While the historiography about the relationship between the
church and the state in nineteenth century Mexico advanced
in the recent years, the version that prevails about this relationship
continues to be raised in terms of the confrontation
between two projects -the liberal/progressive and the catholic/
retrograde. The confrontation is represented as monolithic,
closed, and perfectly differentiated. In this context, this paper
analyzes the liberal press that circulated through the streets of
Mexico City in the mid-nineteenth century and seeks to redefine
the previous approach in order to demonstrate that the essential
characteristics of a Catholic liberalism was exceptional
for being anticlerical but not antireligious.
