El Combate Singular Del Emperador Heraclio: ¿Leyenda O Historia?

Abstract

In the Chronicle of Fredegarius (France, c.660), in the Mozarabic Chronicle of 754 (Spain), in the texts of the Exaltation of the Cross (c.690-780), and in several later sources from the medieval West, it is said that, during the war against the Sassanids, the emperor Heraclius (610-641) defeated a Persian warrior in a duel or single combat. This episode is part of a legendary tradition around the figure of Heraclius, which the Western imaginary linked intimately with the history of the Holy Cross. However, there are noteworthy parallels and similarities between the account of these Western texts and some Byzantine sources, such as the Brief History of Nicephorus. These suggest that this tradition is not limited to the Western sphere. Furthermore, they imply that the history of combat could be the legendary distortion of a historical event that actually happened and that, over time, was transformed into the collective memory. A possibility that no one has analyzed yet, and which will be explore in this paper by the contrast of different sources.
