Mechanisms For The Defense Of Ethnic Identity: The “Sociedad Unión Israelita De Valparaíso” (Chile) Through The Magazine “Nosotros” (1926-1930)
Abstract
Given the limited availability of primary sources to study the historical processes of the different groups of migrants, the ethnic press is an important contribution to know the different activities of the groups to study. This is the case of the “Unión Israelita de Valparaíso Society”, which included an important part of the Jewish community of Valparaíso-Viña del Mar (Chile) and whose community activities were enclosed by the magazine “Nosotros”, published in Santiago. In this work, we use the magazine in question as a historical source, aware of its limitations, but also of the value it has for the information it contains. This study seeks to obtain a background for a better understanding of the role played by the institution in the process of defending its identity values. Our hypothesis suggests that the institution was a good instrument for defending Jewish identity, despite the various difficulties that had to be faced, especially of an economic nature, spatial mobility and the integration that naturally occurred over time.
