Abstract

This article aims to contribute to the study of the elections through which heads of Spanish families elected their representatives in the Francoist city councils between 1948 and 1973. To achieve this, the article focuses on the role played by the Spanish single party, FET-JONS, in the organization of such elections. The paper seeks to delve into this matter from two perspectives. On the one hand, it assesses the effectiveness of FET in accomplishing its role in the organization and implementation of the aforementioned elections. On the other hand, it analyses how those elections influenced the configuration of the political culture of a part of the FET-JONS members. To develop all these aspects we use an approach that combines the political science contributions to the study of elections in dictatorships, as well as the possibilities which local history offers to unravel historical problems of a global nature.

Keywords: elections, dictatorships, Francoism, FETJONS, fascism.
