The Over Emphasis Of Public Education In Chile. Liceo Experimental Manuel De Salas And The ‘Integral Chilean’ (1932-1962)
Abstract
This article focuses on Chilean State Education, specifically the first experimental Chilean State High School, The Liceo Experimental Manuel de Salas (LMS), (1932-1962). The focus on educational development in that period will contribute to understanding the ways in which the Chilean State parceled public education through its varied yet somewhat restricted offerings. An unintended but key consequence of these edu- cational policies were the tensions between the widespread middle sectors over those thirty years. By analyzing the Liceos’ experience, I unravel social compositions, and present a paradigmatic representation of middle sectors’ tensions in which I define the ‘chileno integral’. This analysis can provide insights into the complex and segmented development of Chilean public education vis-á-vis middle sectors of that time.
Keywords: middle sectors, ‘the integral chilean’, Liceo Experimental Manuel de Salas, public education.
