The Electoral Register Of Coquimbo And Coelemu: 1869-1881
Abstract
This article searches to nuance the enfranchisement of suffrage in Chile, through a compared characterization of Chilean electorate between 1869 and 1881. Focusing on official Population ́s census information, electoral census and the originals files of the electoral registry of Coquimbo and Coelemu department, we achieved to identify some mayor failures. Some of them can be explained by the particular characteristics of each territory. This evidence contradicts the supposed enfranchisement of male universal suffrage during the final quarter of the nineteenth century.
