Los balleneros franceses y la caza de ballenas francas en las bahías de Coquimbo y Tongoy, Chile

Resumen

El puerto de Coquimbo y la bahía de Tongoy fueron espacios privilegiados para la caza de ballenas en Chile durante las primeras décadas del siglo XIX. Buques balleneros de distintas nacionalidades llegaban no sólo en busca de provisiones y agua, hacer reparaciones y completar sus tripulaciones, sino también cazaban ballenas francas en esos lugares. En 1835 se publicó un libro que "relata y dibuja" un evento ocurrido el 5 de julio de 1833 donde dos buques balleneros franceses cazan y procesan un par de ballenas francas, una hembra y su cría, en la bahía de Coquimbo. Tomando este suceso como detonante, utilizando documentos preservados en archivos y noticias publicadas en periódicos, se construye un relato sobre las operaciones balleneras francesas en las bahías de Coquimbo y Tongoy, que podrían definirse como “una caza costera dentro de la caza pelágica”, desde una perspectiva inscrita en las denominadas historias oceánicas. El número de ballenas francas australes disminuye y las autoridades gubernamentales prohíben sus operaciones en puertos no habilitados para impedir el comercio ilegal y también el procesamiento de las carcasas en las bahías para evitar los malos olores y proteger a sus habitantes. Esta situación provoca el abandono de los caladeros y la desaparición definitiva de la caza de ballenas en las bahías de Coquimbo y Tongoy.
